Reading at Attention, in Barcelona

reading at attention barcelona

"Attention" is both a directive and a state of mind, an imperative of focus and concentration and an intentional mental faculty associated with interests, care and love. Our curiosities, involvements and friendships are outlined by the intention of thought and tendencies of bodies to concentrate and respond. Simone Weil wrote how “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity,” calling up other lives (and other conversations) and the pure form of generosity that is ‘friendship’.

Attention is a truly limited, unrecoverable resource. Metered out in doses ever smaller in distracted times, attention brings with it the obverse shadow of loss, of missed moments and potentialities. Right now, we are “missing” a vast majority of what is taking place by, to, and around us. We miss the events internal to our brains and bodies, unfolding in your body, in the distance, and right in front of you.

We propose a small attempt at orienting ourselves around notions of attention, time, kairos, and friendship—on the evening of February 10th in Barcelona. We will be orienteered by English-language readings of short texts and excerpts by Bernhard Waldenfels, Paul Valery, Gaston Bachelard, William James, Alexandra Horowitz, Danielle S. Allen, amongst others (readings will be available here prior to the event).
